50 euros is enough to donate a goat, will you give us a hand?
"The young man walks faster than the old man, but the old man knows the way."
In March, at the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, Uganda immediately closed schools and so our thoughts went out to the scholarship students.
Benedeta, Dephine, Racheal, Solomon, Moses, Gerald, Sarah, Okello, Patricia, Sharon, Elizabeth, Opio, Isabella, Noreen, David: what would their lives as young adolescents, without school, be like? What would have happened to them? What would their days have been like?
At the beginning, since attending school also means having guaranteed meals all year round, we thought to distribute some bags of food and basic necessities for hygiene, such as soap. Every 15 days, each student received this help for themselves and their loved one
Then we realized that this could not be enough, we wanted to give a sign of closeness, but also - as it is in our style - a stimulus so that children can always believe, even in times of great difficulty, that they can be useful for someone else. So, inspired by an old project of Caritas of Lira, we thought to buy 15 goats and distribute them to our students.
The children all live in rural areas, where the goat is a wealth, a real reserve capital for difficult times. Each goat can give birth to two kids a year, which become a bargaining chip in times of economic difficulty, allowing entire families to maintain their balance. We have made our students sign a contract with which they become the guardians of their goat and can benefit from milk and other dairy products, but above all they undertake to deliver a goat in December, so that Wecare can give them to Sister Maria Marrone as a gift to help her HIV-positive orphans. The other kid will be theirs, they will be able to resell it or raise it.
Their joy was great, our enthusiasm made the word spread even here in Italy: we received donations for the purchase of 6 more goats. So we wondered who was more right to donate these animals. To some of our guys, drawing lots? To a factor to multiply them? To our missionary friends?
In the end we thought it was right, once again, to address the weaker sections of society. We looked around and chose 6 WIDOW GRAND MOTHERS. A goat guarantees milk and vitamins to the grandchildren, helps these large families to get through the dry months and being very resistant animals are practically an insurance in difficult times.
Would you also like to donate a goat, helping us to increase the economic capacity of our widows and especially to reduce the malnutrition rate of orphans in Northern Uganda?
